• Season. This is a major factor in pricing. Most tourists visit between November and March, so demand—and prices—tend to be higher during these months.
• Model and Class. Naturally, a premium Mercedes S-Class will cost much more than a compact Ford Focus. Luxury cars and convertibles command a higher price, while compact cars are generally the most economical choice.
• Duration of Rental. The longer you rent, the lower your daily rate becomes.
• Location. Prices in Bangkok and on Samui are usually steeper than those in Phuket, Krabi, or Pattaya.
• Additional Options. You can usually add extras—like the option to drive outside the province, a child seat, or upgraded insurance—for an extra fee.

What’s Needed to Rent a Car in Thailand

• A valid national driving license (please note that if your Russian license expires in 2025 and is automatically extended by three years in Russia, that extension does not count in Thailand—a license is only valid if its expiration date is current).

The question of whether international driving permits are necessary in Thailand can be a bit tricky. Legally, under the Vienna Convention, a Russian license should suffice without an international permit. However, in practice, many police officers may ask for one and issue fines if you don’t have it. In Thailand, it’s standard practice to provide a deposit when renting a car—rentals without a deposit aren’t common. You can pay the deposit in various ways:

• Credit card (except for Russian cards),

You’ll need to pay a deposit amounting to 15–20% of the total rental fee online with any bank card. The remaining balance is paid in Thailand when you pick up the car. You can usually use the same methods for the rental payment, except for credit cards, which are not required. As you can see, a credit card isn’t necessary—you can book and receive a car without one.
